PHOTOSHOP BRUSHES: The effects achieved in the thumbnails are by varying the colors. Usually I begin with a darker color and then work up to the lighter colors and sometimes going back and laying down darker colors. Experiment and try using a mixture of the brushes to obtain even better results.
